What is a Muhurta?

A Muhurta is one of the units of measurement of time in Hindu calendar. Each muhurta is further divided into 30 kalā, (1 kalā = 1.6 minutes or 96 seconds). Each kalā is further divided into 30 kāṣṭhā (1 kāṣṭhā ≈ 3.2 seconds). Muhurta is a combination of the Sanskrit root words muhu (moment/immediate) and ṛta (order). The Rig Ved III.33.5 accordingly mentions this descriptive term. Ṛta refers to the natural, yearly order of the seasons, so muhurta refers to the daily reflection of these. 

The significance of Muhurta:

Muhurta is the best time chosen to execute or start an event so that the task is carried out without any obstacle. A shubh muhurta helps in channelizing the energy of the planets and other astrological factors in such a way so as to nullify the evil influences and make the result of the work performed most favorable. The time of birth of a person cannot be controlled by anyone. But the time of the event can be controlled. Basically, the time of an event is the birth of the event; therefore, its future will depend upon that time. Beginning any work at the time of the Shubh Muhurta is always considered favorable and is even a tradition among the Hindu population of India. Muhurta is a tool to harmonize your forces with nature and improve your chances of success. It is rooted in the scientific approach of Indian astrology and it works by ensuring that an individual isn’t going against the forces of nature, it is basically about finding the most suitable time for taking any important action. In a way, Muhurta of an event defines the horoscope of that event. So, for a good future, a Shubh Muhurta is inevitable. The birth chart or the Janam patrika and Muhurta are interrelated because if one performs auspicious tasks and events on Shubh Muhurta according to one’s birth-chart, one will be happy and the problems may also get reduced mentioned. It helps in counteracting the obstructions provided by the birth chart of a person and to neutralize or overcome the loss therein. 

Types of Muhurta:

  1. Graha Pravesh Muhurta:
  • Graha Pravesh Muhurta is associated with an individual moving into a new house. It ensures that the new house brings luck and fortune for the native. 
  • It also is essential in ensuring a long-lasting time within the house and to get rid of new bad energies that might obstruct a happy life to occur within the house.
  • It is usually conducted immediately after the construction of the house and before the family begins living in the house.
  1. Abhijit Muhurta:
  • Abhijit Muhurta happens to tell the best time for an individual for any task. 
  • This Muhurta is considered to be the most favorable for nearly every task, work and new initiatives that an individual is about to start.
  1. Annaprashan Muhurat:
  • It is done after the newborn baby becomes about 5-11 months.
  • It is done for providing the baby a healthy lifespan hoping to happen without any chronic ailments.
  1. Karnavedha Muhurat:
  • It is a sanskar or a ritual in Hinduism is the event that performs the first ear piercing of a baby.
  • It represents the most auspicious time for performing this ceremony. 
  • It is done on the on the 12th day or on the 16th day from the day of birth, or in 6, 7 or 8 months from the month of birth or in odd years from the year of birth.
  1. Marriage Muhurat:
  • Marriage Muhurta refers to the most suitable time for the marriage between two people to take place. 
  • All the marriage ceremonies that take place under Hindu culture happen during these marriage Muhurta to make sure the marriage is a long and happy union. 
  • It is also believed that the marriages tend to stay forever if they happen under this Muhurta.
  1. Mundan Muhurat:
  • It is the first time the hair of a newborn child is shaved.
  • It is done when the child is aged between four months to two years or at times of odd years after the birth.
  • It is also considered to be one of the most important and critical rituals mentioned in the Hindu Vedas and Puranas.
